Music Heritage and Tourism

Music, is a kind of cultural art and contributes an essential proportion to regional cultures and has shown its great values and vitality in promoting a city or village’s economy and enlivening its social atmosphere. Like other art forms, music also acts as a way for people to express themselves. But it seems that art is no longer for art’s sake and music has generated considerable impacts among people and varied cultures around the globe, such as the famous Ireland’s rebellious anthems, southern Appalachia’s traditional music and Welsh’s heroic songs. A large number of music works, bands and musicians often turn out to be a connection between the past and the present music stories. Nowadays, music festivals have naturally developed into significant heritage and tourism resources, constituting an exclusive role for local economies.

Music tourism industry, including diversified concerts, large-scale festivals and music shows, is quite promising and lucrative with the rapid expansion of world economy and living standards. And it is a great act to facilitate local economies by involving music industry into local tourism. Usually, bands or singers’ tour performances covering tours targeting choir and orchestra, or exceptional music festivals, such as Mayo international choral festival, Portland rose festival grand floral parade, Rapla church music festival and Montreux jazz festival.

It was reported that the once popular Beatles band earned the Liverpool city 70 million pounds, and the year of 2012 saw a total of 250 thousand visitors to the Beatles Story. In particular, it was revealed by Wish You Were Here that live music shows won billions of revenue to UK. It also reported that Manchester got more than 20 million pounds added out of its Heaton Park and Stone Roses, proving the enormous power of music tourism stimulating regional economies. It was also found that music is important also because it has managed to create and support at least 24 thousand positions apart from the cash injected into the area’s economic progress.

For example, China has a number of music heritage that have been included into world intangible heritage list by the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), including the very ancient plucked musical instrument with senven strings, which belongs to the zither family. Chinese guqin has a long history, and has been considered the most representative music heritage to demonstrate Chinese music’s essence. Therefore it is worth developing into an important and profitable tourism source. Wuhan, capital of southern China’s Hubei Province, is one of the guqin’s earliest origins. But the guqin has not been well preserved and reasonably developed into a kind of tourism by the local institutions. I think the city’s chiefs in the tourism industry should respond actively to showcase and strategically make the most of its music heritage especially spread the influence of its natively developed guqin art and boost local economies. The city is suggested to attempt a good many measures incorporating music trails, maps, local music industry forum and advocated promoters, performers and varied representatives, parties, campaigns, projects like establishing the site for guqin music archives, just as what Birmingham has done to propel its its natively developed heavy metal music to exert the values of music heritage of the city.

Music might be a matter of self-expression, memories and has magic power. It even can help ignite dreams and cure minds. So it is a meaningful thing to advance music industry for both cities’ economies and individuals .

My name is Zhao Min and from China. I love music quite a lot, in partipular, South Korea’s pop music, K-Pop. This explains why I choose Music Industry as my major.

As far as I am concerned, music is a kind of magic that could make whoever has access to it feel, think or act something different. It is a way to approach “Yourself”, where you may find a totally different world of self, truth, relaxation, beauty, etc in diversified music categories such as punk, jazz, rock and roll, Japanese instrumental music and the featured K-Pop. All kinds of music share their distinctive landscapes of historical evolution and can generate varied impacts along the human history. And I find it very exciting to learn more about how music industry has been developing and changing in the past years. And I do know a large number of researchers have done a good many academic studies concerning music, which present us constantly updating perspectives to understand music often in forms of videos and records.

I want to get a better knowledge of K-Pop as well as other music types and grasp more techniques to understand and express music. Music is amazing and has been extremely fast changing. Therefore, though interesting, it is also somehow chanllenging and complex to tell the stories and conduct historical analysises about the development of music. Nowadays, there are always a lot of factors affecting the ways to write and produce music stories. And it is an interesting thing to figure out how music has been influenced to demonstrate varied forms, styles and characteristics in different periods.

Yet, music, as a special form of artistic expression, it is indeed an essential part of culture. It is developed or created under cultural traditions’ impercetible and subtle but profound impacts.  Take the K-Pop which orginated mainly in South Korea and characterized by electropop, pop ballad, dance pop, hip hop and R&B, as an example, has been developed into a Korean Wave around the globe for its openess to the western cultures, especially those of folk music and hippie in the 1970s. It is not until the 1990s that South Korea’s modern music K-Pop came into existence and much polularity by incorporating its local elements with western pop music’s techno, rock and rap which are quite open, enthusiastic and forceful in a western manner. Psy’s Gangnam Style has become an icon of South Korea, and demonstrates how music plays a critical role in cultural discourse or dialogue in spite of the differentiated languages. I think it right presents South Korea’s unique way to express themselves, their cultures and life styles.

So I would like to comprehend how different music categories have evolved and been mutually influenced in the history, and why they came out in front of public with distinctive characteristics under the complicated impacts of cultures, economy, social environment, technologies, and so on.
